Sex Education in India, are we ready for it?

Sex Education in India : Are we ready for it?
- Krishita Kachhawaha, Student of Parul Institute of Law, Parul University, Vadodara

Once upon a time there was a boy named Rahul, a teenager, as we all know that during this age group due to biological changes one get attracted towards the opposite sex easily, hence was a “STUD” (sexually active man). In his friend circle, he had a huge status and was a matter of great proud of being a stud. While on the other hand, Samaria, a teenager as well, going through the same stage, hence a “WHORE” (sexually active female) is considered characterless in the eyes of society. Why this difference in the society’s thinking that what a men do is a thing of great pride and women doing the same thing makes her characterless, why so?Why a women need a #metoo movement to tell their harassment stories? In India from past 5-6 years rape rates are increasing continuously rather than going down. According to reports, rape is fourth most common crime in India. Still there are many unregistered cases which are not included in government records or for which an FIR is not lodged and are out of police records. The famous “Nirbhaya rape case”, incident happened on 16 December, 2012, it’s been roughly 7 years of this inhuman incident and still the parents are pleading for the date of the conviction for capital punishment. This also poses a question on judiciary for the late disposal of the case. The society is also equally responsible for the same as we are heading towards development technologically but in mental status of the majority is still the same. We can take the example of the famous ancient scripture “MAHABHARAT”, in this era it is said that women’s were respected the most and harassed the most. If a piece of cloth wore by Krishna can save Draupadi from being molested by Duryodhan than why the same piece could not become a death rope for Duryodhan. We also not forget the practise of ”JAUDAR ”, a very common practise in north India of burning oneself by jumping into a well of fames, committed mainly by women of Rajput kingdom to protect themselves from foreign invaders. Then comes the practise of “SATI PRATHA” which was followed till ages, until Raja Ram Mohan Roy brought it to the notice of British government which later brought BENGAL SATI REGULATION ACT, 1829 which had its jurisdiction in all the British states. Let us also not forget that during the partition between India and Pakistan, women were raped and molested a lot across the boundaries. Many women tried to kill themselves rather than becoming an object to men of the other religion. This also shows how the women were prone to crimes since ages. But at the same time we should not forget the valour and courage of women such as Rani Laxmi Bai, Raziya Sultan, probably the first female ruler in south Asia and many more in the list.

Major problem the Indian society is facing is the mentally of the people, which can be improved only by education. What if we make an attempt to legalise prostitution in India? Let’s assume that we had made prostitution legal in India, but is society going to accept the same. You ask every teenage ager he/she shall be aware about the “RED LIGHT AREAS”. The people who do so are humans only but when it comes to girls they are said to characterless in this matter. There are any countries in the world having made prostitution legal. There is no mentioned clearly that prostitution is illegal in India, but human trafficking for prostitution purpose, or prostitution in a hotel, child prostitution is illegal.A women being raped is not accepted in the society even if she tries to come out of the trauma, the society takes her back to the scenes and remind her to the incident again and again by their way of behaviour. They girl or women has not committed any crime, it is rapist who are to be boycotted not the survivor. But we need to also take into consideration that the favours provided to women are not misused to defame a person. Nearly every person want to have a “virgin” wife. But the thinking of today’s generation is changing and the attempt can be more effective rather than one more attempt of banning few hundreds of porn sites on internet which was done way back in 2018.
This shows that the mentally of people especially of educated class is improving and are becoming open minded.

India is country having maximum no. of youth in the world. With such no. of youth population we need to make the adolescents aware about the consequences of their act. As children at this age are curious to know about everything and in this urge of getting new information, make them reach the doorsteps of “PORN” sites leading this misguidance and wrong information. And in the urge doing sexual intercourse leads to unwanted pregnancies. Sex education is also very important and should be added in the school curriculum. They should be taught this subject without any shame and should clear all their doubts related it, so that they are not misguided. They should be taught about using contraceptive measures such as condoms or contraceptive pills to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies in adolescents. As unwanted pregnancies in girls are also one of the major problem faced by teenagers at younger age with leads to serious mental and health issues.
One of the major issues that is very common in India, urge of having a boy or a male child in family to support the parents in the old age. Why girl is not considered a part of the family after marriage or is considered incapable of supporting his family? Why this kind of mentally is still prevalent in India? After having so many legendary female freedom fighters, having women being represented in United Nations, Olympics, in space research organisation and had left no field untouched by them. Especially in rural areas this mentally is still have its roots. More opportunities are given to a boy child in a family as compared with girls. If we teach a girl to walk aside on road if a boy is approaching then why can’t we teach the same thing to a boy? From the very childhood we need to inculcate morals and ethics in children to respect each other as they take whatever is taught to them but as they start developing their own opinions and view point of life it is very difficult to handle. We need to have the same atmosphere for both a girl and a boy.

The world is changing at a very fast pace and to catch up with the pace we need to adapt ourselves in that way. Revolution is a part of world, what we need to develop is good temperament to make this world a good place to live in. Supporting each other’s and working with hand in hand will lead to all around development of both male and female and their families leading to all round development to society and nation at large. Law needs to be stricter in nature as rapist have no fear to law. Speedy disposal of the cases is also the need of an hour. The cases remain pending for years keeping the wound to the survivor always fresh. We as a new generation is capable enough to bring a change in this world. As“Change begins from home only”.
