Measures of Preventing Identity Theft in the Post-Internet Age

Today in the twenty-first century, when the world has become a virtual village, and things can be done at the click of a button, the information storage capacity of the computers has augmented enormously. As a result of it, businesses across the globe are connected online, and net banking has become a buzzword. The tremendous increase in both this storage capacity and the use of the Internet for business and financial transactions coupled with social-networking has led to the rise of a myriad of white-collar offences or illegal practices within this virtual village. Identity theft is one such white-collar offence, which is on the rise across all jurisdictions. Identity theft impacts not only the personal finances and the emotional well-being of the victims but also has the power to bring down the economy to its knees. A crime which was more prevalent in the West has now crept into developing countries such as India too. Therefore, identity theft currently posits as a massive challenge for governments and law enforcement agencies worldwide. This article aims to study the occurrence of such identity thefts in this post-internet age, briefly examining the legislative provisions in the Indian law and suggesting measures for the prevention of the same.
